From the Principal
Welcome to 2022, our 66th year of providing a quality Catholic education in the Edmund Rice tradition. I particularly welcome all students and families who join the St Joseph’s College community this year. I trust everyone has returned feeling refreshed and ready for all that 2022 will bring. It has been wonderful to welcome the students back this week online, and we are eagerly awaiting their return in person on Monday. I am sure that after a long break the students are very keen to return to school, catch up with friends and return to the classroom.
On Monday at our Year 8-12 virtual assembly, I highlighted that we are embarking this year on the second year of engaging with our St Joseph's College Towards 2024 Strategic Plan. A strategic plan that outlines our shared vision for St Joseph’s College in aspiring to:
- Engage our community with our Edmund Rice Charism through providing opportunities to develop a personal faith and a willingness to Serve Him in Others.
- Highlight that we are all learners and as a staff, we seek continual improvement and growth in teaching and learning, enabling our students to graduate from St Joseph’s College as caring, capable, and positive contributors to society.
- Empower the young people in our community to pursue their passions and aspire to excellence to meet the demands of their future pathways.
During 2021 our students made great progress with their learning and in 2022, it will be important that we continue to grow a strong ‘Culture of Learning,’ which is the key aspect of our strategic plan. We encourage all students from Years 7 to 12 to start well and focus on their schoolwork from now. The most important message that can be reinforced by parents is the need for the young people to start early and maintain consistent application throughout the year, thereby, giving us the best chance of achieving our academic and engagement goals for 2022, which include:
- 100% of the Year 12 cohort graduating with a Queensland Certificate of Education or a Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement
- 90% of our ATAR eligible students achieving an ATAR rank above 60
- 28% of our ATAR eligible students achieving an ATAR rank above 90
- 95% attendance rate for students
- 25% increase in VG and G ratings for learning attributes on reports
Welcome New Staff
We have welcomed 18 new staff to St Joseph’s College this year, including ten teachers, and we wish them all the very best as they navigate their way through the complexity of life at St Joseph's College. Adrianne and Rosanne in their roles as Program Leaders will add their own special touches to the excellent work carried out by Cathie Barton and Madeleine Minns in 2021. Emma and Candice in their roles as Curriculum Leaders will add their knowledge and skills to continue the excellent work carried out by Peter Keightley and Jacqui Dignon in 2021. Furthermore, Emma and Candice will work with our teachers and as part of our Curriculum Team to assist our staff in maximising their teaching and learning skills. We look forward to Emma’s and Candice’s contribution as we continue to seek new ways to improve the educational experience and outcomes at the College.
In 2022, as part of our goals from our annual action plan, we also aim to finalise the development of a learning framework which will allow for greater consistency in the way lessons are delivered at the College. While exposing students to various learning experiences in the classroom is of great importance, tying our lesson plans to a schoolwide framework ensures students are consistently receiving the best possible pedagogical experience.
Communication Reminder
Over the coming weeks there is obviously going to be continued uncertainty around the ability of the College to host several important whole College events. I encourage parents to read the communication shared by the College thoroughly to keep up to date on what is happening at St Joseph’s College and to make contact if you have any questions.
Best wishes for the upcoming weeks.
Kort Goodman - Principal
From the Deputy Principal
To all our new families and students, welcome to St Joseph’s College for the 2022 academic year. We trust that your time with us will be exciting and fulfilling. To all our returning families and students, welcome back. Albeit the start of the 2022 school year is different to what we are used to, we are very much looking forward to commencing on-campus learning on Monday 7 February.
Online Learning
Well done to our Year 8-12 students who have commenced online learning in such a positive manner this week. Our teachers report a positive engagement and commitment. Commendation is also extended to our Year 7 students who thoroughly engaged with our online Induction and familiarisation activities. Well done to all our learners, and thank you to all parents for your ongoing support. We look forward to face-to-face teaching and learning at the College from next Monday 7 February. As a community we thank our generous and professional teaching staff.
COVID-19 Updates
As we continue to communicate in relation to changes as a result of COVID-19 please ensure your contact details that we have registered are correct. We ask that you contact the College if any of you contact details need to be updated.
All of our COVID related communication is available on the St Joseph’s College website as a quick reference as required.
Start of the Year
As we start a new year, our tip to all students to get the most out of their schooling is to be involved in as much as possible in a wide variety of areas. This is the way students will meet other like-minded students, learn and become excited by their high school journey. It is then over to the students to participate in as many of the activities and events, and take every opportunity which is provided to them. The common theme of our 2021 senior students as they reflected on their time at the College was - ‘participation’, ‘get involved’, ‘the more you give, the more you will receive’. They learned that it was by getting involved in the school that gave them the greatest pleasure, the best memories and sense of community.
Partnership
A key to success at St Joseph’s College is partnership - partnership between the students, their teachers and you, the parents. Please remember that we are only an email or a phone call away if you have any queries or concerns. Staff email addresses are as follows: firstinitialSurname@sjc.qld.edu.au e.g. bwillocks@sjc.qld.edu.au.
Please do not hesitate to make contact should you feel there are other topics that may need addressing throughout the school year as we work to help our young people navigate their journey.
God of the journey, may St Joseph’s College be a place where our culture is clear, a culture of Christian love, leading to each individual becoming a better person, and so enabling success and happiness. Amen.

2022 Liturgical Theme
Over the past year, the Liturgy Group has been developing a liturgy theme that focusses on togetherness, and the idea that we can all become better people by sharing our lives together. This group of deep thinking and passionate young people chose to intentionally create a theme that encompasses all of our core values and imperatives in some way. This theme is ‘Together at One Table’.
‘Together at One Table’ centres around the idea that all people are welcome at a table, no matter their cultural diversity, age, gender, or other characteristics. The Joey’s Way asserts that we should ‘Celebrate Diversity’ as one of the 12 imperatives. We believe that a table is an inclusive symbol and one that makes for a wonderful focal point for the coming year.
Many activities happen at a table, such as the sharing of a meal, talking, laughing, playing games and learning. The versatility of a table lends to multiple imperatives, including ‘Speak and Act Safely’ and ‘Participate and Persevere’. When people sit at a table, they are all equal and on the same level – there is no hierarchy, and it is an inclusive arrangement. The table also allows room to grow, because when someone else wants to join the gathering at the table, you make room and share the space between all people. The table itself symbolises nourishment, gathering, celebration, planning, and work.
The Liturgy Group and I are excited to explore this theme with staff, students, and parents, and to reveal the many thoughtful symbols they have planned to tell the story of Catholic faith, our Edmund Rice Charism and our St Joseph’s community.
Summoned by the God who made us
rich in our diversity,
gathered in the name of Jesus,
richer still in unity.
Let us bring the gifts that differ
and, in splendid, varied ways,
sing a new Church into being,
one in faith and love and praise.
Bring the hopes of every nation;
bring the art of every race.
Weave a song of peace and justice;
let it sound through time and space.
Draw together at one table
all the human family;
shape a circle ever wider
and a people ever free.
Celebrate Diversity
Our insistence that each human being is an image of God should not make us overlook the fact that each creature has its own purpose. None is superfluous. The entire material universe speaks of God’s love, his boundless affection for us.
Pope Francis, Laudato si’ (2015)
Like many religious schools, St Joseph’s College requires our community to commit to our College Values and imperatives. These values and imperatives are grounded in scripture and connected to the life and example of Edmund Rice. We believe the Joey’s Way is our unique contextualised way of expressing our Catholic identity and living our charism.
As part of our Joey’s Way, we call on our community to recognise the dignity in every person as each person is made in the image and likeness of our loving God. Two of our imperatives – Respect Unconditionally and Celebrate Diversity – are of particular importance when we consider how we respond to people’s differences or uniqueness.
Toowoomba Catholic School’s Catholic Identity Position Paper (2019) also calls us to this response:
Being created in the image and likeness of God accords everyone an equal and inherent dignity. We believe in an innate original goodness and a universally shared dignity. This belief shapes a hope-filled and life-giving outlook on life for self, others and the created world.
Being created in the image and likeness of God gives everyone unlimited potential. We are motivated by the desire for a successful and flourishing life, to engage and educate the whole person and to use their gifts and talents for the good of all.
Being created in the image and likeness of God opens to everyone the promise of fullness of life, a meaningful and fulfilling life. This generative force inspires yearning, growing and changing for the good.
At St Joseph’s College we firmly believe that all are welcome at our table, and we stand for unconditional respect and dignity. This means that no matter a person’s race, gender or sexual identity they have a place in our community. Not only do they have a welcome seat at our table, but we also believe everyone should be celebrated for the unique and wonderful individuals they are.
Across this year at St Joseph’s, our celebrations (liturgies, assemblies, and significant days) will reflect our theme of ‘Together at One Table’. We will embrace all the ways in which we are different and all the gifts each student brings to our community. As this theme calls our community to live out our imperatives of Celebrating Diversity and Respecting Unconditionally, we hope to grow our students’ understanding of how they can advocate for others and create an environment where all feel welcomed, included, and free from judgment and discrimination.

Who do I contact for help?
If you have any questions about your son or daughter’s classes please refer to the diagram below.
Please contact the Classroom teacher in the first instance via phoning the College or emailing, or for pastoral matters please contact the Joey’s Way teacher.
If you have further curriculum questions and you have already contacted the classroom teacher you are then asked to contact the relevant Curriculum Leader. If your son or daughter is in Year 7 please contact Mrs Wighton who will be able to assist you.
Questions about curriculum and subject changes for electives each semester can be referred to Mrs Park-Ballay for students in Years 7-9, while in the Senior School curriculum questions can be directed to Mrs Tobin. We also have a wonderful new Careers team comprising of Mrs Harman, Miss Penner to assist with work experience, career planning, school based apprenticeships and traineeships.
We are excited about working with your son or daughter and hope that open communication is the key to this support.
Assessment Calendars
Teachers are currently planning assessment for the Semester. All students and parents & carers will have access to the Semester One Assessment Calendar for 2022 via an Edsmart broadcast and also by accessing the College Intranet. Currently they are in draft form and will be finalised in the next fortnight.
If you have any questions about assessment, please contact your child's classroom teacher or Curriculum Leader.
St Joseph’s College is responsible for gathering evidence of student achievement on or before the due date for internal assessment instruments.
All students have electronic access to their assessment schedules and it is their responsibility to adhere to these due dates.
Students are responsible for planning and managing their time to meet the due dates.
Students and parents can contact teachers and Curriculum Leaders via Phoning or emailing to help with communication. Teachers are not able to grant extensions directly with students and parents/carers.
St Joseph’s College is required to adhere to QCAA policies about due dates accepting assignments only on or before the due date unless an extension through AARA processes has been approved. For example, a student who is absent due to family holidays will not be granted an extension for an assignment as this doesn’t meet the AARA guidelines set by QCAA.
Academic Support
Each Thursday afternoon from 3.15pm – 4.15pm Academic support will continue in our Library Seminar Rooms.
Teachers may request students attend these sessions if they have not met expectations at checkpoints or drafts for assignments.
This time is an opportunity for students to complete work and receive assistance if required. It is important that parents support the request for students to attend these sessions as teachers are trying to assist students who are behind in their work.

Uniform Expectations in 2022
We are looking forward to welcoming your child back to face-to-face classroom learning on Monday 7th February.
With this in mind, it is important that all students take the time to ensure that they are meeting the expectations of our College uniform, thereby living out our imperative of Be Proud, Be Humble. A summary of our college uniform is below, it can also be found on page 6A of the College diary.
In particular, we are asking for your support in ensuring the following:
- Any hairstyle must be of the same length at the sides as it as at the back. Mullet hair styles are not permitted. Hair must be tied back if it covers below the eyebrows or touches the collar.
- Additional piercings (including in the nose and upper ear) are not permitted. Students are not permitted to wear transparent sleepers or studs in their nose or in upper ear.
- Students should not wear the sports ‘bucket’ hat with formal uniform.
- Students wearing the boys’ uniform must have a black belt.
Students who do not meet uniform expectations can expect to be respectfully challenged by school staff and may be asked to go home should they deliberately or repeatedly fail to comply.
The uniform shop is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 8am -12pm, and every Wednesday from 8am 4pm.
Thank you in anticipation of your support as we help our students meet these basic expectations.

Curriculum News - Senior Years
While the start to the year may have been a little different, the 2022 school year is well and truly underway for students in the Senior Years. Curriculum Leaders and class teachers have worked tirelessly to prepare synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities for students. This unexpected start to learning may have presented challenges for some students; however, by re-framing our thinking to see opportunities, we can see that students have been presented with a chance to grow their agency to become self-directed learners.
What's ahead in the Senior Years?
We are pleased to host Academic Excellence morning teas again this year to recognise student achievement in both the Middle and Senior Years. As a reminder, students in the Middle Years who receive four or more As on their term report, and in Senior Years, students who receive three or more As across either Unit 1, 2, or 3 will be acknowledged. Our first celebration for the year will take place on Tuesday, 8th February.
Year 12 parents and students have received information about the upcoming Academic Care interviews that will be held in Week 3 and 4. At St Joseph's College, we believe these interviews show our commitment to Year 12 students, their learning, and future pathways. Through a collaborative conversation with students' Academic Mentors, discussions will centre around the following areas:
- Academic Achievement
- QCE tracking
- ATAR predictions
- Engagement and commitment, and
- Goals setting
Academic mentors are looking forward to engaging in these conversations with students and parents.
A Strategic Intent outlined in the College's Strategic Plan recognises that we are an aspirational learning community that empowers young people. A new year provides opportunities for reflection and change; I challenge all students in Years 10, 11, and 12 to be aspirational about their learning. Success in Years 10, 11, and 12 starts with a consistent approach to learning. Students are encouraged to reflect on and consider these, five simple strategies for the start of the new school year.
- Set goals for the year.
- Set a domino habit. A 'domino habit' is a small, simple habit students can create that will have a domino effect on the rest of their day and their productivity. A domino habit could be writing a to-do list, using the College diary more effectively, or asking clarifying questions in class.
- Minimise distractions. To get work done, students need to minimise the distractions around them. This applies both at home and in class.
- Show Agency
Showing agency is about students taking ownership and being responsible for their learning
- Track results and progress
Taking ownership over your learning means that students track their results and progress across Units 1 & 2 (Year 11), Units 3 & 4 (Year 12), and across terms 1- 4 (Year 10). By tracking results and progress, it means that students know where they are in their learning and what their next steps will be in order to achieve their goals.
Karen Tobin - Program Leader - Senior School Learning - ktobin@sjc.qld.edu.au
Welcome to the 2022 school year
I hope that the school holidays have provided you and your families with a change of pace and time to relax together.
We have had an interesting start to the 2022 school year, and hope your children are enjoying their first week of online learning. This year we have 180 new year 7 students and approx. 35 new enrolments in grades 8-12.
Our teachers have been very busy preparing resources for learning, and I know our learners are very keen to get going face-to-face.
In the interim our student induction Canvas course has been designed as a digital induction of our learning management system, Canvas. Students can work through this course to familiarise themselves with Canvas and completing schoolwork in a digital setting. If you are having any issues at all, please reach out to the College.
On Monday 7 Feb we welcome all students to the College campus. Our intention is to run a digital assembly, and various activities to induct students into the College.
We ask all students to ready themselves for an adventure and new experiences. Let go of any thoughts that hold them back, unleash themselves from their comfort zone, take every new opportunity, participate fully, and use all the resources here to reach their full potential. The beginning of the year has thrown us all some challenges but nothing we cannot face together.
Amanda Wighton - Student Induction - awighton@sjc.qld.edu.au
Religion
We welcome three new staff into the Religion department in 2022. We also have the pleasure of welcoming Mr Chris Fitzpatrick back to St Joseph’s College after leave.
Please take the time to read their introductions below.
Adriane Markham
Adriane was previously employed at John Paul College, South Kalgoorlie as the Director of Faith and Liturgy. Her qualifications include a BSSc Psychology and Cultural Anthropology (Edith Cowan Uni), Grad Dip Education (Notre Dame Fremantle), Masters of Education RE (Notre Dame Fremantle) and a Bachelor Arts Honours (Uni of WA). Her previous roles have seen Adriane heavily involved in community groups and service work throughout Western Australia.
Rosanne Pietsch
Whilst I completed my own schooling years in Toowoomba as well as my initial training, I have spent the bulk of my teaching career in various independent schools throughout South-East Queensland and in Sydney. After 20 years away, I moved back to Toowoomba 5 years ago with my family having spent the 4 years prior in Washington DC, USA. I feel blessed to be a part of the St Joseph’s College community this year to teach Religion and Music and have felt warmly welcomed over the past couple of weeks. One of my favourite Bible passages is found in Phillipians 4. “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all.” I pray that my classes this year will experience joy in their learning.
Steven Threadgill
I come to St Joseph’s from the NT where I was Head of Boarding at Fordimail Aboriginal Hostel in Katherine. Prior to that, I have taught in New Zealand, Japan, Brunei Darussalam, the United Kingdom, France, Sri Lanka, Ghana and Australia. I believe that understanding the various ways people in the world come to understand their different realities through religious experience is essential for fostering a cohesive society.
Chris Fitzpatrick
I first arrived at St Joseph’s College in 2006. This year, I return after some leave. I am really looking forward to teaching Year 7 and Year 10 Religious Education!
I thoroughly enjoy teaching Religion because it presents knowledge and, to develop our understanding, challenges us to think and wonder. It also provides the opportunities to reinforce, and learn new, skills which are useful across all subjects. It helps us to be a better person and member of our communities!
Sports
Swimming Carnival
Our carnival has been postponed until February 24. With the influence of COVID still around us the carnival will again be split into two parts. The years 10,11 and 12 + any year 9 students who turn 16 this year will compete in the morning session. The Year 7, 8 and remaining year 9’s will go down for the afternoon session. All points will go to the age champion and house points.
Students will make their own way to the pool for the morning session but those requiring transport from the College, a bus will be provided. For the younger age groups, they will be transported to the pool but need to make their own way home unless they need to catch the buses from the College in the afternoon.
This is a normal school day, and ALL students are encouraged to attend. If they are not swimming, they are part of the cheering for those students who are swimming for their house. All students should be able to compete in the 25m swims (depth is low so most should be able to walk the distance). All points go towards house points.
Students wear their sports uniform or house colours as instructed by their house leaders. When the morning students leave the pool, they must change out of their uniforms if they are not going home.
Sienna Deurloo
Just like Ash Barty, Sienna has achieved a magnificent honour.
Last year Sienna competed in the Queensland Open Water Swimming Championships at Coolum. She placed first in the 16 years 5km race. This qualified her to compete at the Australian Open Water Swimming Championships to be held in Adelaide.
Well, this event occurred last weekend and I am very happy to announce that Sienna won the gold medal at the event in the 17 years age group over the 5km event.
A fantastic effort considering we live in Toowoomba, and this is an open water event. A lot of time and effort would have gone into training for this event as well as a few trips to the coast to swim in the open waters.
Unbelievable work Sienna. Congratulations.
TSSS and Darling Downs Trials.
Please check the calendar on the SJC Intranet, as a number of trials are coming up in the next few weeks.
Forms and payments must be made before students can go to trials and I would hate to see anyone miss out.
A broadcast should have been sent to all students with changes of dates and conditions.
Please contact me as soon as possible if you have any concerns.

Career Pathways
Happy New Year from the Career Pathways Team!
We hope you are returning refreshed, rested, and ready to start taking control of your future career pathways.
As mentioned, we have welcomed Miss Penner, who will be working alongside Mrs Harman. We look forward to assisting you with all your career related queries and working to understand and develop your hobbies and passion and turn them into a future career.
Career Drop Ins
The Career Pathways Team is continuing with career drop-ins this year, introducing several topics that will ensure you are well equipped, comfortable, and confident to enter the workforce. In Term 1, we will focus on the below topics in the Library Seminar Room.
Enrichment
A huge thank you to all the parents who responded to our correspondence regarding the Enrichment Program for Term 1. We are pleased to announce that we had our highest response rate at 97%!
We look forward to continuing to provide the flexibility for our students to participate in an enrichment activity, remain at the College to undertake supervised self-guided study sessions, or go home to study or attend work placements.
You will receive further correspondence on your child’s enrichment activity and fees associated over the next few weeks.
Year 10 work experience
Work Experience for our Year 10 students will commence, Monday, 9 May to 13 May 2022. Students will receive a copy of the Work Experience documentation during their Joey's Way class. Please start discussions with your child regarding career areas they may like to sample. In the meantime, we are more than happy for students to approach businesses about placement for Work Experience.
Career Profiling Sessions
In 2022 St Joseph’s will be introducing a new initiative for Year 10s to start their career development and career exploration process, and although this is voluntary, we would encourage students to participate.
The program aims to stimulate students’ thinking about careers, to help them identify some potentially compatible career pathways that suit their strengths, interests, and personal style, and to stimulate them to research areas in which they are interested.
The program will begin with a Career Profiling Session on 25 May 2022. More information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Opportunities
The Toowoomba Defence Team are hosting several virtual career information sessions for school students, teachers, and parents during February 2022. This is a fantastic opportunity for schools to join us via google meets or phone to learn more about defence pathways.
