Year 12 Final Week
Next week the spotlight will be firmly on the Seniors of 2022 who will conclude their time at the College. Over the week they have many farewells including their Celebration Day with their cohort, their Joey’s Way group farewells, Presentation Night for 2022 and they conclude the week with their Graduation Assembly and Valedictory Dinner.
These farewells are a sign, that over the time that each of the students of the 2022 senior cohort spent at St Joseph’s College, they became a part of a community and their departure creates a sense of loss for us and quite possibly for them. We would hope that all the senior cohort would acknowledge that their time at the College has had a positive impact on their lives to date and will assist them in the future. An important role all of us can fulfill is to hold these young people in our prayers. They all have such huge potential to make a difference to our society.
Finally, I want to wish the Year 12 students every possible blessing in their lives and ask them to remember that their loving God is walking every step of the way with them. Best wishes Year 12 students take care and remember that no matter what challenges lay ahead of you into the future, you are always a past student of St Joseph’s College, and you are always welcome.
Art Show
On Thursday 3 November we held our annual Art Show. The evening was a great celebration of a variety of the cultural pursuits of our St Joseph’s College students from Yr 7-12. Congratulations to all students who had works featured in the annual Art Show. We thank the Arts and Hospitality Teams for their coordinated efforts, in particular, Mrs Chrissy Dwyer, Miss Aleesha Deagon, Ms Rosanne Pietch, Ms Megan Scott, Miss Jess Skinner and Mrs Nina Marshall.
Teacher Showcase
St Joseph’s College has a rigorous and robust Professional Learning Framework. Staff participate in weekly professional learning teams, engaging with impact cycles to improve student outcomes and build self and collective efficacy. In 2022, our professional learning journey culminated in a Twilight Sharing Showcase (Tuesday 1 November), which celebrated our successes as a community of learners. Thanks to all the SJC teachers for your collegiality and sharing the learning journey.
Remembrance Day
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marks the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front after the bloodshed of World War I. Over the past century, this moment has been adopted across the globe as a time to remember those who served and sacrificed in all wars and conflicts. On Friday 11 November at 11:00am, St Joseph’s College will join millions of Australians observing one minute's silence to commemorate Remembrance Day - a quiet moment held in recognition of those who have served, died, or suffered in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. Learners will be pausing during class to remember and show their respect for those who lost their lives at war so that we can enjoy the peace and freedom that exists in Australia today.
Year 7-11 Final Assignments and Examinations
I wish all learners at the College the best of luck as they complete their final assignments for 2022 over the coming weeks. I trust that all students are studying hard to complete final assignments and to prepare thoroughly for these examinations. For Years 7-10, grades received for Semester 2 assessments will be communicated on their final end-of-year reports for 2022.
Schoolies and Safe Parties
At this time every year parties and school leaver activities can be an important part of a teenager’s social life. Some school leavers will be attending Schoolies events and it is a good idea for parents and young people to talk about alcohol, drugs, and parties.
Schoolies
Whilst Schoolies is about fun, drugs and alcohol can result in diminished fun and potential harm to young people during this time. Ideally school leavers will avoid alcohol and drugs to create good memories instead of bad ones. Much fun and celebration can still be had without any influence of drugs and alcohol.
To support school leavers to make good choices at Schoolies parents are encouraged to discuss with their young people:
- The plan for the week - find out about activities before leaving home.
- An activity plan that doesn’t have a focus on alcohol and drugs.
- The legal ramifications of alcohol and drug use - legally, young people could face fines for possessions and/or trafficking if found in possession of a ‘trafficable quantity’ of drugs.
- Future safeguarding - having a criminal record can restrict future opportunities in life.
- Driving - young people on their learners or probationary driving licences must maintain a zero blood-alcohol level. Never travel with a drinker.
- Drugs - during Schoolies young people may come across synthetic drugs which mimic the effects of common illegal drugs. These are often ‘pushed’ to young people as ‘herbal’, ‘party pills’, ‘bath salts’. Far from being benign, these are often more unpredictable than the illegal drugs and should be strenuously avoided, as should illegal drugs.
- Drink Spiking – avoid sharing drinks and vigilantly watch drinks to avoid the risk of spiking. If there is a suspicion that a drink is spiked just leave it.
- Physical safety - report all threats of violence to police and trust your instincts about physical safety.
- Energy drinks - don’t mix energy drinks and alcohol.
- Water safety - don’t drink and swim.
- Being an upstander - plan for the safety of self and Don’t hesitate to call an ambulance if anyone looks like they have had a bad reaction to any substance – call 000.
- Help friends make good decisions and avoid risky situations. Plan activities that can be done together.
- Mental health – drugs and alcohol can exacerbate mood disturbances. Have a plan to support your Schoolie’s mental health while away.
- Stay hydrated with water.
- Consent – pressuring someone into having non-consensual sexual activity is sexual assault and illegal.

Merit Trip 2022
As you may be aware, St Joseph’s College is pleased to take students on the 2022 Merit Trip to Dreamworld if they meet the following criteria.
Criteria | Time Period |
Two or fewer Ignatius Room referrals | Term 4 |
No Suspensions | Term 1, 2, 3 and 4 |
Greater than 90% attendance | Term 3, 4 |
Two or fewer uniform infringements | Term 4 |
If you believe that your child’s attendance rate has dropped below 90% due to circumstances beyond your child’s control (i.e. illness), please take the following steps:
1. Check that your child remains eligible to attend the 2022 Merit Trip based on the other three criteria (fewer than two Ignatius Room Referrals, no suspensions and fewer than two uniform infringements).
2. Check your child’s attendance percentage via the student portal.
3. Confirm that your child had a genuine illness or other factor that affected their overall attendance percentage. Please note the time period (Term 3 and Term 4 only) over which we measure attendance for this year’s merit trip.
4. Genuine illness or other circumstances notwithstanding, confirm that your child’s attendance would have been over 90%,
5. Email Mr Luke Logan- Acting Assistant Principal Student Engagement (llogan@sjc.qld.edu.au) who will review your child’s Sentral profile and determine your suitability to attend the 2022 merit trip.

Year 12 - Accessing myQCE
Has your child logged into their myQCE account so they can check their Year 12 results?
A reminder to check with your son or daughter about accessing their myQCE site. Can they show you their LUI number? Do they remember how to log in?
You will need your learner unique identifier (LUI) the first time you register for the Student Portal. If you have already registered, you can log in with your email and password you have set for your account. Remember the email must not be the school email as students won’t have access to this email once they graduate.
See the Student Portal FAQs if you need help to access your account.
Year 11 Study Skills Day
Congratulations to the ATAR eligible students who attended the Study Skills day on Thursday 10 November. Over 200 students from the Catholic Secondary schools attended This initiative was a collaborative approach between St Joseph’s College, St Saviour’s College, St Mary’s College, Our Lady of the Southern Cross College, Assumption College, Mary MacKillop College and Good Samaritan College.
Year 11 Exam Block
All Year 11’s are expected to attend school on the final day – Friday 25 November. Students in Year 11 have the privilege of studying at home and coming in for exams, however, if a student is behind in work, the College will be in contact and the student will be required to attend school under supervised conditions. Therefore, it is in the best interest of students to be up to date and be allowed to work from home.

Finishing strong
The end of the year is just around the corner, Christmas decorations are out in stores and the holidays are calling for both staff and students. However, before we can celebrate the end of another year we have to get through the final few weeks.
Our year twelve students are in the final days of their schooling journey and hopefully feeling confident that the time and effort they have put into their studies will manifest into results that will springboard them into a bright and promising future.
However, for some of our younger students that day of graduation seems an endlessly long way away. This is the time to remind our students that it’s not the time to switch off but the time to switch gears. The holidays are around the corner but we need to put the effort in now so we too can revel in the success of our work while enjoying the break.
Over the next few weeks students will be in the thick of assessment and the stress that comes with these experiences. Additionally, they will be navigating relationships with peers and adults while feeling tired and not having the tolerances they normally would have at their disposal. At this time of year, it is important to remember that at St Joseph’s we have amazing resources to support our students.
Firstly, our amazing counsellors Shauna Green (sgreen@sjc.qld.edu.au) and starting at St Joseph’s this week Kate Stenhouse (kstenhouse@sjc.qld.ecu.au).
Secondly, our staff who are working tirelessly to support the student in their classes to reach their full potential.
Thirdly, our Ignatius Room process which is designed to support our students when their relationships are bruised and in need of restoring.
We also have Academic Support, homework club, Canvas pages, tutoring opportunities and plenty more to support students to be the best they can.
As the end of the year approaches, I can confidently say that St. Joseph’s College is doing everything in our power to finish strong. The question for students is… Are you?
Success is a matter of digging deep and finishing the year as strongly as you can.

The Significance of Rituals
In Week 7, we will celebrate the journey and achievements of our 2022 Year 12 cohort. This week is an opportunity for our College to thank our Year 12s for all they have contributed during their time at St Joseph’s. It is also an opportunity to farewell them as they embark on the next part of their journeys.
Rituals help us to recognise the changes in our lives and mark occasions when our role in the community is changing.
Currently, our Year 12s are in a liminal stage. Liminal stages are times when a person or a group is in the process of transition.
Our Year 12s stand on the threshold. They are almost ready to transition to the next stage of their journey. Next week we will celebrate in our ritual as they cross the threshold from school student to graduate.
In Joey’s Way lessons this week, students are learning about the power of rituals like Graduation and the many symbols we use to create meaning.
Some of the significant symbols are:
• Hands of Blessing – We raise our hands over the seniors as we pray for them.
• Guard of Honour – A tunnel of the community that our seniors walk through at the end of their farewell assembly.
• College Candle & House Candles
• Senior Tie
• The School Song
Prayer for our Graduating Students
Father God,
We thank you for these graduating students.
We pray that you will give them
direction, purpose, and perseverance
as they enter the next phase of their lives.
Give them clearness of mind to move forward
into the plans and purposes that You have for them.
May these young people gain wisdom from You
and have discernment for proper behaviour.
Raise up mentors for these graduates
so they have someone who
holds them accountable for their actions.
We pray that they will have the boldness
to stand up for what is right
wherever they work, study, or socialize.
Give them wisdom to spend their time and money wisely.
Grant them success for their efforts at every turn
and guide their feet to follow Your ways.
May they be eager to do good and not evil
all the days of their lives.
Use them in mighty ways.
In Jesus name,
Amen.

2023 College Captains
Hello, St Joseph’s Community!
We are Sophie Wagner and Shane Hurlock and we are your 2023 College Captains. We just wanted to take this chance to express to you all our gratitude and recount our experiences so far as leaders, as well as our excitement for the next year.
Over the past term, we have been introduced to the wonderful world of leadership within the Joey’s community and we are absolutely amazed by the spectacle it is. So far, we’ve had the honour to be included and participate in the incredibly beautiful Changeover Liturgy. We had the opportunity to get to know the next generation of Joey's kids at Orientation Day and were able to help with McAuley’s wonderful Day for Daniel initiative, all the while reflecting on the massive amount of knowledge and wisdom we received from Riley Furse and Tahlia Utz - our incredible 2022 predecessors.
We are so very excited for the year to come and cannot wait to leave our own unique mark on the College. We have some very, very big shoes to fill, but we believe we’re up to the challenge.
Once again, Sophie and I would like to stress how incredibly blessed we feel to have been appointed as your 2023 College Captains. So far, we have absolutely loved every second of it, as we’ve been presented with a wealth of opportunities in only the first few weeks of our captaincies. SJC is an amazing place, and we are humbled to have been given the opportunity to lead it.
Have a great end of term and enjoy the Summer Holidays. We hope they are safe and relaxing for everyone!
Shane and Sophie
Brennan House
With the staffing changes as a result of Mr Goodman’s long service leave, I am privileged to be looking after the Brennan community for the remainder of 2022 whilst Mr Luke Logan steps in the Assistant Principal – Student Engagement role. It is always a pleasure to see both hard work and care that students and staff in Brennan put into living out our motto “Care for Everybody”
Care for Everybody Week.
During week 1 of Term Brennan House led “Care for Everybody” week sharing its Care for Everybody spirit with the wider Joey's community. Throughout the weeks Joey’s Way lessons students were given the opportunity to learn about each of the following charities and the work that they do to support the local community.
- CPL (Disability and Age Support)
- BLUSH CANCER CARE
- GOOLBURRI (Supporting the Indigenous Community)
- DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ACTION CENTRE
The week culminated in a sausage sizzle organised by the 2022 and 2023 student leaders where students were able to direct their donations toward their chosen charity:
The following funds were raised:
- CPL (Disability and Age Support)
- BLUSH CANCER CARE
- GOOLBURRI (Supporting the Indigenous Community)
- DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ACTION CENTRE
Total: $647.80
As we race to the end of term, caring for everybody starts with caring for yourself.
Here a few tips to keep you best positioned for success in the last half of term 4.
Focus on kindness and gratitude
An act of appreciation or kindness produces positive emotions, stronger social connections and improved well-being. Consider simple ways you can build gratitude and kindness into your day. And the best thing? Kindness and gratitude are contagious!
Get started: Each night, recall three good things that have happened during the day. To make it easy to keep track, check out the Gratitude Journal app.
Maintain good sleeping habits
Good-quality sleep is one of the most important aspects of maintaining your physical and psychological health. With assessment due and end-of-term activities ramping up maintaining a regular bedtime routine
Build up your emotional resilience
Think of proactive ways to manage stress. Meet regularly with friends and family, spend time on hobbies you enjoy, read or watch things that make you laugh, and build into your daily routine proven stress-busting activities such as yoga, meditation or exercises that involve deep breathing.
Get started: There are lots of great (and free) apps to help you manage stress. Try Smiling Mind.
Keep focused on your goals
Setting goals is a great way to give you direction, focus and motivation. Try to ensure that all your goals are achievable, measurable and have an endpoint. It can be helpful to break a larger goal into more manageable sub-goals.
Get started: Think of something that, if you do it today, will make you feel satisfied and accomplished. Then do it!
Reward yourself
The improved physical and psychological health that comes from prioritising your well-being is a reward in itself, but there’s also value in using tangible rewards when you meet particular goals.
Get started: Consider simple and practical ways to reward yourself whenever you reach a goal or take a concrete step towards one.
The Brennan Prayer:
We pray we can look after our family,
Realise when we are in need of a friend,
Work to keep pride within Brennan and,
Maintain a culture of inclusivity and ambition.
Omnes Curae
Care for Everyone

Cultural
The musical life of the College continues to flourish and contribute to many events here at St Joseph’s College.
Here is a snapshot of events that have already occurred or are upcoming throughout Term 4:
Orientation Day for Year 7 2023
Junior Concert Band provided a great performance and really set the tone for the day by performing as new students and their parents/carers arrived on Orientation Day. The band performed several pieces from their repertoire this year including, Louie, Louie, Tequila, Unconquerable and Forget You. Many thanks to Mr Yori Dade who has conducted this group this year. They sounded fabulous.
Twilight Art Show entertainment
Several of our chamber ensembles provided high-quality performances in the foyer of the music block as guests arrived and departed the Art Show last week. The Brass Ensemble, Flute Trio, Clarinet Quartet, Saxophone Quartet and Guitar Club all contributed to making the evening such a success. Many thanks to the talented students involved in these ensembles and to their directors Mr Andrew Will, Mr Yori Dade, Miss Hannah Smith and Mr Ayden Roberts.
Congratulations and thanks also to Riley Furse and Camillo Lanzafame who both performed 45-minute sessions in amongst the Art Show displays on the Grand Piano to provide entertainment and atmosphere as guests viewed the art. The skill and talent of these two students that enables them to do this are exceptional. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Queensland Symphony Orchestra Concert
This Thursday evening Miss Scott and I will accompany a group of students to the Empire Theatre for the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Regional concert. We are grateful to the St Baker Energy Innovation Fund - School Arts Program and Evie Networks, who offered St Joseph's College music students a limited number of free student tickets to this concert. The concert is entitled Superfamous.
Music Ensembles Break-up
Following a fun year of music making, all ensemble students from Years 7 – 10 have been invited to bowling at Sunset Superbowl this Sunday. Looking forward to a fun afternoon and some strikes!

Library
End of Year Returns Processes:
As the term and year draw to an end, we would like to remind students of the following recall dates for returning library loans (both textbook and general collection).
Year 12 | Year 10-11: | Year 7-9: |
Friday 20/10/22 | Monday 14/11/2022 (Week 7) | Friday 18/11/2022 (Week 7) |
On these recall dates (above), students will receive an email listing their outstanding loans and it will be expected that at this time the listed loans are returned to the library. Please note that in the case of students who have examinations after the recall date, they are permitted to keep the subject textbook required for study, but it MUST be returned on the day the examination is completed. The Library would like to remind students that in the majority of subjects they have access to their textbooks on our digital platform Box of Books and so, keeping the physical copy may not be required- it is up to the individual student and their preference for revising from a physical or digital text.
We would also like to take this opportunity to communicate the final date for returning library loans. Any loans not returned in good condition on or before the following dates will incur a charge:
Year 12 | Year 10-11: | Year 7-9: |

Toowoomba’s Future Artists Celebrated at St Joseph’s College Art Show
The largest showcase in the history of the St Joseph’s College Art Show took place on November 3, with approximately 400 artworks on display and more than 250 people attending.
Celebrating creativity and diversity, the showcase pieces ranged from traditional works with paint or ink to repurposing materials as wearable artwork.
Curriculum Leader of the Arts, Chrissy Dwyer said she was proud of all the students involved in the Art Show and the quality of work they produced.
“This is the biggest showcase we’ve ever had for our Art Show, with the inclusion of two new categories; the Open Entries section and the Joey’s Way Collaborative Art Project,” said Ms Dwyer.
“It’s a great way for our art students to shine and get praise and feedback on pieces they’ve worked hard on all year.”
The Toowoomba Art Society’s Allan Bruce judged several awards presented during the evening.
Mr Bruce said he was amazed at the sheer amount and quality of works on display.
“There are some very talented young artists here tonight, which I see as a testament to the Art Department,” Mr Bruce said.
“I’ve always found at the Junior Art Expo for our Society that St Joseph’s College has a very strong display.”
“A message that I always give to parents is that having a career as an artist is a solid and viable option for some of these kids, and you should support them.”
Acting Principal Brendon Willocks said the Arts make up an important part of the curriculum at SJC, with the Art Show being one of the biggest nights in the College’s calendar.
“Our Arts Curriculum has the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich all students. We’re very lucky at SJC to have such an experienced teaching staff who encourage them to reach their creative and expressive potential.”
“We are always looking at new ways to provide our students with opportunities to get expert feedback and support like we did tonight with Allan Bruce judging tonight,” said Mr Willocks.
“We also hold incursions within the College with our skilled teachers and resources, and excursions to UniSQ so our students can experience that outside expert guidance too.”
“These students are the future of art in the Toowoomba region, and we are really excited to see what some of these young artists will achieve,” he said.
Local Artist Sheryl Faignes also donated two glorious, Australian-inspired acrylic pieces which were gifted as lucky door prizes.

As he is here to improve his English, host students do not necessarily need to be studying Japanese – although there are obvious advantages for our students if they do. Fusuke is interested in movies, music, video games – typical teenage boy interests – and he is very keen to experience the Australian outdoors. If you think your family could accommodate him for the term, or even just a few weeks, I’d love to hear from you. He will arrive just before the start of Term 1 and will leave straight after, so holiday time with families will not be impacted.
There is also weekly payment given to help with boarding costs.
If this sounds like something your family would enjoy, please drop me an email at the College and I can provide further information.
