From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Students
Well done students, teachers, and community members!
Today I would like to take the opportunity to offer a vote of congratulations to a number of members of the St Joseph’s College community. These students, teachers and school officers are all very deserving of being congratulated on their efforts as they set a wonderful example of what we are endeavoring to achieve at St Joseph’s College. Aspiring to excellence through participation and perseverance demonstrating humility whilst being proud of our individual and collective achievements.
- Congratulations to Jan Lengren (Admin, Finance & Facilities Support), Karen Tobin (Excellence in Leadership – Middle Leadership), Emma Chalmers (Excellence in Teaching & Learning - Secondary Expert Teacher) and Jacqui Dignon (Excellence in Leadership - Emerging Leader). These wonderful people were nominated across the various sections of the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Excellence Awards. We are so very grateful for the outstanding contributions these people make to our community. Best of luck to Emma and Jacqui who have progressed to the finals of these awards which will be announced next Thursday night.
- Last Wednesday we congratulated our Academic Excellence Award recipients for Semester One 2023 and next week we will congratulate our SJC Catholic Education Week Award recipients for 2023. These students are to be commended for their outstanding commitment and dedication to their learning and engagement with the Joey’s Way.
- Congratulations to the QISSRL and QISSN teams who represented the College with endeavour and humility over the mid-year break. Thank you also to the staff who so generously gave up some of their holidays to accompany the teams. It was a pleasure to watch you engage with each other, compete, and improve over the week.
- Congratulations to both the Junior Girls Soccer team and the Boys Open Futsal team on their outstanding efforts in representing the College gallantly against South-East Queensland powerhouse schools of sporting excellence this week. Both teams should be very proud of their efforts in making the Bill Turner Soccer Competition semi-final and the South Queensland Champion of Champions Futsal tournament. We also wish our junior girls futsal team all the best for their trip to the South Queensland Champion of Champions Futsal tournament next week.
- Congratulations to Paul Canning, Peter Keightley, Deb Newton, Kerrie-Anne Fellenberg, Madeleine Minns, and Mark Holdsworth who next week will be presented with Diocese of Toowoomba Catholic Schools Long Service Awards in recognition and appreciation of their service of between 25 and 45 years. We thank you for your commitment and dedication to Catholic Education.
Communication Protocols
We would like to take a moment to explain the importance of our communication guidelines. As educators, we believe in fostering a healthy balance for our dedicated teachers, while ensuring effective and timely communication with parents and students alike. By setting a 2-business day turnaround for communication, we aim to provide thorough and thoughtful responses to inquiries. This timeframe allows teachers to provide careful consideration to queries and provide well-rounded solutions. Additionally, we have established the hours of 6am to 6pm as the designated communication window for staff to respond to queries. We have requested that teachers refrain from emailing students and parents outside of these hours to foster a sustainable and healthy teaching environment. Thank you for your understanding and support in upholding these communication expectations. Together, we can create an environment where effective communication thrives, while respecting the personal boundaries of our dedicated educators.
Teen Mental Health First Aid
Adolescence is a time of important change and development. It is also a time when mental health problems such as depression and anxiety first emerge. During the high school years, mental health problems are among the leading causes of falling grades, problems with friends and relationships and substance use or abuse, and they can have a lifelong impact. That is why early intervention is so important and why we have made the decision to invest heavily in educating our students about Mental Health First Aid. These courses are held yearly with our Year 7 and 10 students and next week our Year 7 students will begin their Mental Health First Aid training/ These courses will be facilitated by Shauna Green (College Counsellor) and myself who are both MHFA facilitators. Further information for parents can be accessed via this link at the Mental Health First Aid Australia website https://mhfa.com.au/
Week 3 - Catholic Education Week
Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos. Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
Catholic education:
- Is a faith-based education which places the values of Jesus at its centre.
- Is a high quality, holistic education for 1 in 5 young Queenslanders, educating them to be well-informed, highly skilled and constructive members of the community.
- Values diversity and treats each student with dignity enabling them in turn to promote and respect the dignity of all.
- Nurtures in students a commitment to social justice and a critical social consciousness.
- Prepares students for global responsibilities through stewardship of the earth’s resources.
- Is an integral part of the local and universal Church.
- Occurs in welcoming, inclusive, and connected communities.
We take the opportunity this week to congratulate and show our appreciation of the efforts of all students, teachers, school officers, and volunteers who are part of our community and we look forward to continuing on the great tradition of Catholic Education in the Toowoomba Diocese.
Every two years we ask parents, students and staff in our communities to share their views, to ‘check in’ on how each school within our community, and as a group of 31 schools together, we are bringing to life our purpose: to enable full and flourishing lives.
The Shaping our future – Toowoomba Catholic Schools perception survey was sent via Sentral on the Monday 17 July. This 15-minute survey closes on Sunday, 6 August, 2023. Please check your email for a link to the survey. We encourage all members of our community to complete the short survey. In addition, we would also ask each of our families to prompt another family who is part of our community to complete the survey to generate some enthusiasm and provide us with the most comprehensive feedback possible.
Prayer for Catholic Education Week
God the Father
You are the Creator and life giver
You are our shield and our rock
May we be people who honour and respect others.
May we support and challenge each other.
God the Son You are the light of the world
You are our teacher and healer
May we be people who listen to and care for each other.
May we reach out to those who are excluded and treated unfairly.
God the Holy Spirit You are our helper and friend
You inspire us and guide us
May we be people who speak the truth and share our gifts.
May we make a difference in our school community.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord
Amen

Looking Forward and Goal Setting
We would like to acknowledge the students who have been endeavouring to achieve their personal excellence and growth in all areas of their schooling. Following a review of the recent Report Cards, we trust that many families have had conversations of affirmation and discussed goal setting for Term 3. The key message for EVERY student is to consider the challenge to make progress, to improve, to learn, to grow and to develop.
Below is a diagram that explains the relationship between achievement and progress. It shows clearly where we would like students to ‘aspire to excellence’. As articulated in the SJC Towards 2024 Strategic Plan we “…embrace a culture of learning to empower young people to pursue their passions and meet the demands of their future pathways”.
Over the past few months, I have been sharing some tips in relation to study habits and routines. This week I would encourage you to review the 3min video below, which is a brief introduction to how memory works and its importance for learning and teaching.

St Joseph’s College is pleased to announce that the 2023 Merit Trip will take place on Friday the 24th of November, Monday the 27th of November (Year 8 and 9) and Tuesday the 28th of November (Year 7). This year’s trip will be to Dreamworld.
The purpose of the Merit Trip is to acknowledge the many students at St Joseph’s College who continue to live out The Joey’s Way consistently. A summary of criteria for student eligibility in 2022 is below:
Criteria | Time Period |
Two or fewer Ignatius Room referrals | Term 4 |
No Suspensions | Term 1, 2, 3 and 4 |
Greater than 90% attendance | Term 3, 4 |
Two or fewer uniform infringements | Term 4 |
No Ns for Behaviour or Application on most recent report | Term 3, 4 |
If your child is eligible for the 2023 Merit Trip you will receive a permission form via Edsmart in Term 4.
Student who are not eligible to attend the 2023 Merit Trip should attend school as normal on these days.
If you believe that your child’s attendance rate has dropped below 90% due to circumstances beyond your child’s control (i.e. illness), please take the following steps:
- Check that your child remains eligible to attend the 2022 Merit Trip based on the other three criteria (fewer than two Ignatius Room Referrals, no suspensions and fewer than two uniform infringements).
- Check your child’s attendance percentage via the student portal.
- Confirm that your child had a genuine illness or other factor that affected their overall attendance percentage. If possible, please obtain a medical certificate to indicate your child’s absence. Please note the time period (Term 3 and Term 4 only) over which we measure attendance for this year’s merit trip.
- Genuine illness or other circumstances notwithstanding, confirm that your child’s attendance would have been over 90%,
- Email your child’s House Leader if you have any additional enquiries.
Thank you in anticipation of your support as we recognise the vast majority of our students who are living out The Joey’s Way consistently.

Grandparents’ Day
This is the third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. And this year, Pope Francis calls us to recognise how grandparents and the elderly are a value and a gift both for society and our community.
As this year we explore our theme of “Set Our Hearts on Fire”, we recognise that each of you brings your own light and flame of wisdom to our community. We recognise how the flames of each our hearts has been brought to life because of our grandparents. They have shared their lives and their stories with us, given us warmth, comforted us when our flames are going low, and sparking the flame with cheeky smile or treat.
The Year 12 Liturgy Group, in planning for their theme, wanted today’s celebration of our grandparents and elderly to focus on the image of the candle.
“A thousand candles can be lighted from the flame of one candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness can be spread without diminishing that of yourself.” ― Ghandi
A candle is not diminished by sharing it’s flame with another - the passing on of the flame from our elderly and grandparents is the same. We are gifted their light and their warm and their story and we can take it forward in our lives, bringing more light into the world.
Grandparents
Few can bring the warmth
We can find in their embrace,
And little more is needed to bring love
Than the smile on their face.
They’ve a supply of precious stories,
Yet they’ve time to wide a tear,
Or give us reasons to make us laugh,
They grow more precious through the years.
I believe that God sent us Grandparents
As our legacy from above,
To share the moments of our life,
As extra measures of His love.

Cultural Captains
Hello Joey’s Community!
It’s Amelia and Alyssa here. A lot has happened since our last newsletter article, and we are so excited to update you on what has been going on! We were very busy in the arts department last semester: with music camp, harmony day, eisteddfod and of course musical. Students also performed on open day and at the TCSO Arts Fest and participated in the SHEP weekend.
In week 6, we celebrated International Arts Education Week. After numerous artistic activities, we ended the week in prayer, as well as a small busking style concert. It was an amazing turn out, and we would like to thank all the students who performed on the day, as well as the college community that turned up to listen and support their peers.
In week 7, we performed for the college community at our annual “Skits and Semiquavers” concert. Many students and staff were involved, with a total of 17 performance items. It was a fantastic night, and we would like to thank the students for their hard work, the tutors and supporting staff for making the whole night happen, and also to the amazing audience who made the night very special.
During the next two weeks, we have a number of students representing the college in the Toowoomba Eisteddfod. We wish everyone luck with their individual performances, as well as the music and dance ensembles here at the college.
Another exciting aspect in the cultural side of our college is the musical. “Freaky Friday” rehearsals are ploughing ahead on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon, and on Sundays. Tickets are now on sale for the 17th to the 19th of August. We hope that you can support the hard work of our students, and more importantly enjoy a fabulous show.
We still want to encourage everyone to keep participating in what they are passionate about, whether that be academics, the arts, or sport, so that we can all share our amazing achievements and talents together.
Thank you so much!
2023 Cultural Captains - Amelia Rawson and Alyssa Young
Welcome New Students
New Students Commencing – Semester 2
As we welcome staff, students, and families back for Semester 2, it is an opportune time to extend a warm welcome to the 9 new students and their families who have joined us in the past 2 weeks. We understand that transitioning to a new school can be a mix of excitement and trepidation, especially when it happens midway through the year. To ensure a smooth integration, our induction process pairs each new student with a same year level buddy who provides support during the initial days and weeks at the College.
High school encompasses more than just academics; it revolves around the people you encounter and the connections you establish. Building positive relationships with fellow students and teachers creates a supportive network that enriches the high school experience. On Tuesday 18th July, our new students were invited to a welcome lunch, where they had the opportunity to spend quality time with their buddies, Joey's Way Teacher, and other key staff members in a relaxed and casual setting. This gathering allowed the new students to foster connections, identify the faces of key staff who can support them and helped them develop a sense of belonging within our school community. We are looking forward to seeing them share their talents and gifts with the College during their time here.
HOT-5 and Executive Functioning
This year, we have explored the concept of executive functioning with the Year 7 cohort. What exactly is executive functioning? Executive functioning is described by some as “the management system of the brain” and is separated into three main areas: working memory, cognitive flexibility (also known as flexible thinking) and inhibitory control (which includes self-control). Executive functioning is responsible for many skills including:
- Paying attention
- Organising, planning and prioritising
- Starting tasks and staying focused on them to completion
- Understanding different points of view
- Regulating emotions
- Self-monitoring (keeping track of what you’re doing).
(Understood for All, 2022)
The development of executive functioning skills is a gradual process, with each student having unique strengths and areas for growth. Consequently, there are various ways in which executive functioning can be nurtured both at home and at school.
At the College, one effective approach to developing executive functioning skills has been the implementation of the HOT-5 hand. Initially introduced to our year 7 students, the HOT-5 hand serves as a visual reminder placed on their locker doors, in classrooms, and in the Year 7 Hub. This tool supports students in bringing the necessary materials to all their lessons. Teachers have noticed the positive impact of the HOT-5 hand, with many highlighting the improved organisational skills displayed by the year 7 cohort compared to previous years.
To further support executive functioning at home, you may wish to consider the following strategies:
- Foster a structured environment:
- Keep your child's timetable and the College calendar visible, such as on the fridge or a pinboard.
- Utilise term planners and weekly schedules to encourage your child to manage their schedule effectively.
- Collaborate with your child to create a designated study area at home. Emphasise the importance of maintaining its neatness and organisation. Consider an open and visible space that allows for supervision, promoting safe Internet and ICT usage.
- Encourage healthy habits:
- Promote adequate sleep, nutritious meals, and regular physical activity. These factors contribute to a well-rested and nourished brain, enhancing cognitive abilities and executive functioning.
- Maintain supportive relationships:
- Foster open lines of communication with your child, creating an environment where they feel comfortable discussing their challenges and seeking guidance.
- Collaborate with their teachers to stay informed about assignments, due dates, and their progress. Working together as a team reinforces executive functioning skills and cultivates a positive learning environment.

9.00am GF Defeated Emmaus College 31 – 16 (this team beat us 2 points in the round
games)
The girls did not bring home a trophy this year, but they did progress from being in 8th position in Division 4 to finishing in 7th position in Division 3. This improvement demonstrates the students determination.
As you can see by the scores, we had the opportunity to place higher as some of our scores were so close.
After each game the opposition coaches, nominate who they believe was the Player of each Match. This year the award went to a very well-deserving player, Eliza Zillmann.
The girls appreciated the support of parents/guardians who followed them through the year, with getting them to training, trial games and the competition held at Glennie.
They also appreciated the support of Ms Morrison as support coach, Mrs Wright as our scorer for the week and of course Mr Wheeldon for representing us as our umpire for the week.
Without the support of all the above people we could not go to events such as these.
We are going to need even more support to travel to Townsville next year. If you can offer any type of sponsorship for the girls or would like to oversee a fundraising group, please contact me.
Athletics Carnival
Nominations have also been called for Range Zone (10 – 12-year-olds) athletes, as well as 13 – 19 years DD athletics trials.
Please email the name of the student, DOB and events with times and distances recorded.
Our carnival is being held at O’Quinn Street on August 4.
Some events have already taken place and over the next couple of weeks the 1500m are being run either at JW time or at lunch times. Students wishing to compete for age champion will need to be at these events.
Please see below a draft of the events taking place on the day.
St Joseph College Shines in DD Senior Schools Cup Volleyball Competition
On Wednesday, July 19th, three teams from St Joseph College showcased their talent at the DD Senior Schools Cup Volleyball Competition held at Harristown State High School. For many of the participants, it was their first experience of a competitive volleyball competition, and they did not disappoint.
The boys' team displayed remarkable skill and determination, securing a well-deserved bronze medal. Meanwhile, both girls’ teams demonstrated impressive performances, finishing fifth in their respective pools.
Each game the duty team voted on who they thought the best player was on each team. Recognising these outstanding players, the MVP awards went to Daniel Ooi, Layla Kuehnemann, and Chelsee Kidd, making the day even more memorable for these talented individuals.
Overall, the event proved to be a fantastic learning experience, fostering growth and sportsmanship among the students. Congratulations to all the participants, coaches, and supporters who made this day an unforgettable one.

Last Tuesday night I had the pleasure of taking the intermediate boys (mostly Year 7 and 8) for their first competitive game of volleyball. I have never seen a group of boys enjoy themselves so much and have so much fun, that sitting there until 9.00pm was no trouble at all.
Even better for them was that they won the game against Toowoomba Grammar (2 sets to 1).
Parents had a great time watching them as well, so hopefully many more wins to come. What a pleasure sport is!
Bill Turner Cup Final
On Thursday July 20 the girls travelled to Kelvin GroveState School to play the semi final of the Bill Turner Cup. Unfortunately, the girls from Kelvin Grove were just a little too quick for us and their skill level just above us. The girls tried very hard but couldn’t match their teamwork and skill level. It was a great experience for them and I am sure they will take many positive experiences away from the game. I know I am very proud of their efforts.
Many thanks to Dave Nugent for coaching the girls at the game.
Hack and Dressage
Mrs Carlton sent in this fabulous photo of her daughter Regan who on Sunday 16/7/23 competed on her rising 4yr old Australian Riding Pony “McArthurparc Enchanting” AKA “Romeo” at the Northern Districts Hack & Dressage Hack Show day at Burpengary.
This was Rome’s very first start, Regan & Romeo did exceptionally well winning
* Supreme Child Rider
* 1 x Champion
* 2 x Reserve Champions
* 5 x Firsts
* 1 x Second
Placing in every class, a very exciting start for a young pony, Regan & Romeo have their sights on representing SJC next year in the SJC Interschool Equestrian Team.
Well done to both Regan and Romeo.
Well done to Lucas Clarke who played in Cairns as part of the Darling Downs Under 15 Boys Rugby Union team!

Junior Band and Junior Choir will perform in the Grandparent’s Day Concert and Senior Concert Band was preparing for the upcoming Eisteddfod. Both Junior Choir and Junior Band were accompanied by some of our more experienced musicians who acted as mentors for these rehearsals. It was great to see these students helping in this way and making it a very worthwhile experience for all involved.
