Newsletter - Term 3 - Week 10 - Issue 111
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Students
Farewell & Best Wishes
In 2020 four weeks after beginning my time as Principal I wrote the following reflection on my first impressions of St Joseph's College.
Firstly, I have found the students, staff, parents and wider community of St Joseph’s College to be very welcoming. Each day numerous members of the community have gone out of their way to take the opportunity to come up to say hello, welcome me, wish me the best of luck and say that they hope I enjoy my time as part of the St Joseph’s community. I greatly appreciate these efforts and I am sure that I will enjoy my time here.
Secondly, I think this is a very happy and caring school. The amazing smiles on the faces of the students in the classrooms and the playground, the laughter of the staff in the staffrooms and the interactions that I have witnessed between all members of the school community over the first month highlight the joy, care for each other and enthusiasm that the community brings to school each day. Father Ray Crowley often speaks about how when he goes into a school community he goes and talks to the office staff, the groundsman, the cleaners and the youngest students. He does this because he believes that if these people are happy then the school is going well. Based on my conversations with these groups, I would have to say that St Joseph’s College is going well.
Thirdly, it would appear that the students and staff are proud to be members of the St Joseph’s College community. I believe that this is reflected in a number of ways including; the outstanding way in which the majority of students wear their school uniforms, the great care the students, groundsman and cleaners take to ensure the school looks great each day, the way the staff and students talk about the school and its history.
My final observations would suggest that the students and staff are really committed to striving to make the most of each day’s opportunities. From the determination and exhaustion on the faces of the students at the swimming carnival to the great efforts of the staff who have worked so hard to prepare and ensure the year starts successfully, to the students being prepared and on time to classes. All of this evidence confirms that we are going to have a great year.
Congratulations students and staff of St Joseph’s College. What a lovely school to be a part of and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to be here.
Three- and three-quarter years have since passed and while lots of water has passed under the bridge, I am really happy to say that these are the same reflections that I have had on my last week at the College. St Joseph’s College is an outstanding educational community that provides amazing opportunities for the students and staff to continue to learn with and from each other. It has been a pleasure and privilege to be the Principal of this great community.
As a conclusion to my time at St Joseph's College, I would like to extend a number of votes of thanks.
To our current and past members of the St Joseph’s College Executive Leadership Team: Mr Brendon Willocks (Deputy Principal), Ms Kellie-Marie Ford (APRE), Mrs Kerrie-Anne Fellenberg (AP Curriculum), Mr Joe Cryle (AP Student Engagement), Ms Maree Commerford (Program Leader Staff Development), Mrs Karen Tobin (Program Leader Senior School Learning Leader), Mr Bill Whiting (Acting Program Leader Middle School Learning Leader), Mrs Cate Park-Ballay (Program Leader Middle School Learning Leader 2021 – 22), Mrs Emily Whiting (Program Leader Staff Development 2021-22), Mrs Julieanne Rassmussen (Past APFM). I thank you so very much for your leadership and support over the three- and three-quarter years. You have been amazingly supportive, committed, and generous with your time and you have and will continue to do a tremendous job.
To the ancillary and teaching staff of St Joseph’s College, your efforts are greatly appreciated. You continue to demonstrate an open mind to the belief that individually and as a group we can continue to be better educators and this is a testament to your professionalism and the care you have for our students.
Finally, to the students of our College. Thank you for continuing to buy into the culture that is building at our College. A culture of being involved and doing the best you can do as an individual and a collective group. Your commitment to striving to do your best invigorates and energises our community.
Best wishes to all of the St Joseph's College Toowoomba community for the future and I look forward to visiting over the upcoming years.
God Bless
Kort Goodman

Year 12 Trial Exam Block
Year 12 General Students at St Joseph's College celebrated a milestone with the conclusion last week of the Year 12 Trial Exam block. It showcased the dedication and determination of the Year 12 general classes but also underscored the exceptional quality of education and support provided by the school. The students exhibited an exemplary work ethic, demonstrating their commitment to academic excellence. The Trial Exam block served as a crucial stepping stone towards their final exams, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence needed to excel. The collective effort of both students and staff was evident throughout the rigorous examination period, and it undoubtedly sets a promising precedent for their impending success in the upcoming final exams. This achievement not only reflects the resilience and perseverance of the Year 12 cohort but also stands as a positive way St Joseph's College nurtures and empowers its students.

Year 12 Retreat
This week our Year 12 cohort took time to reconnect and celebrate their journey on Year 12 Retreat at PGL Kindilan Adventure Camp, Redland Bay.
It was a time of reconnection and reflection for the students as they gathered for their last time together on camp. They had a great time participating in camp activities. Many of them got soaked as they canoed on the lake. They felt the thrilling rush of the flying fox and giant swing; as well as the pain of the harness for some. And they tested their skills at archery. In the evenings, they reflected on their journey so far and considered all those that have that help them travel the Joey’s Way.
I thank Ms Barton for her organisation of this wonderful time for our students. We were blessed with a team of excellent staff (Mr Wheeldon, Mr Cullen, Mr Kelly, Mrs Hetherington, Ms Chalmers and Ms Lawrence), who gave their all to the activities and support our students with great care. And I thank our students for their willingness to be involved, to be vulnerable and to connect with each one last time before their journey starts to head towards its final destination of graduation.
Truth Telling and Shared Healing
On Wednesday 13 September, a group of our students attended the Commemoration of the Battle of Meewah.
Dr Mark Copland describes the uniqueness of the story of Multuggerah:
“The thing about the Battle of One Tree Hill is that on this one day in this one place, the people stood up and said, ‘No more’. There was an organised resistance campaign, an act of defiance with bravery and sacrifice on display. And on this occasion the foe recognised and recorded the strength of this resistance. They accorded honour to the warriors they faced. In a sense we are just bringing this back to light.”
As a school of the Edmund Rice Tradition, we have an obligation to listen to the stories of our First Nations people and find a path to healing through understanding, education and truth telling. I thank Mr Col Speed who organised this excursion, along with Mrs Harmon and Mr Watts who attended with the students.
An Aboriginal Prayer For Truth and Hope
by Brooke Prentis
May the God of all wonder who set the stars in the sky,
bless you with relentless unsettledness –
that drives you to seek truth.
May the God of all justice who gave motion to the rivers,
bless you with righteous anger –
that drives you to seek freedom for all.
May the God of all love who placed laughter in the kookaburra,
bless you with the friendship –
that looks like the love where one lays down their life for another.
May the God of all comfort who determined the height of the mountains,
bless you with tears from shared pain and mourning –
that shows you hope.
Now with wonder, righteous anger, sacrifice, and lament –
Go in truth, justice, love, and hope –
to Change The Heart of Australia.

College Captains
Hello St Joseph's!
First of all, we wanted to say a massive congratulations to every student who has just completed Term 3 exams and assignments, especially our fellow Year 12s for their consistent effort during our trial exams in Week 8.
Shane and I are, as I’m sure many Year 12s are, experiencing lots of lasts, so as we approach the final term of the year, we encourage everyone to continue with the strong sense of perseverance, passion, and participation that we know you have always shown. We want you to be able to look back at the end of the year knowing you have no regrets or have missed any opportunities.
Alongside extensive external exam preparation, we have been experiencing lasts such as our last event on behalf of St Joseph’s; being the St Mary’s 100 Days Dinner. This event was a chance to relax, reflect and enjoy time with leaders from other schools that we have formed great friendships with over the last year. In addition to this, we also attended the Just Joey’s Trivia Night, which further the relaxing, fun nature of events we’ve been attending. Although we didn’t win, we had an amazing night and are excited for the Trivia Night’s future at SJC.
We often talk about events that we’ve attended at other schools, or at places other than SJC. We have long wanted to host our own event to show off our lovely school. Using this, we identified an area that needed attention: the transition of leaders. Previously, in our and other leaders' experience, there has been limited time to learn from our predecessors in terms of leadership and the duties and responsibilities it entails before we were thrust into the world of leadership. Thus, we created an event that solved this problem; the Endeavour Gala. The Gala will feature an exciting guest speaker, important conversations between leaders present and future, and will aim to make the 2024 Student Leaders feel increasingly confident in their leadership adventure. Whilst it will only be between SJC leaders this year, the event’s potential in the years to come is sky-high, and will be future leaders’ to shape and make unique to their year. We believe that this event will be our legacy to the College – a legacy that will hopefully last for a long time.
We hope you have a relaxing and safe break!

McAuley House
Spring is a time of renewal and growth, and it is also a time when honeybees come out of their winter hibernation to begin the process of pollination. Honeybees are essential to our ecosystem, and their role in the pollination of plants is crucial for the survival of many species. Just as honeybees play an important role in the natural world, the work of Catherine McAuley, the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, continues to inspire us to play an important role in the world of compassion and service.
Catherine McAuley, like the honeybee, was a symbol of hard work and dedication. She dedicated her life to helping those in need and her tireless efforts to improve the lives of the poor and marginalised reflect her compassion and resilience. Her work with the poor and the marginalised reflected her deep compassion for others. She believed that every person, regardless of their social status, deserved to be treated with dignity and respect.
Honeybees, like Catherine McAuley, are also a symbol of resilience. They can survive in a variety of conditions and are able to adapt to changes in their environment. Honeybees can withstand harsh winters and still be able to pollinate in the spring. Similarly, Catherine McAuley faced many challenges and hardships in her life, but she never let them defeat her. Her determination and perseverance were remarkable, and they helped her to overcome many obstacles.
Spring is also a time of hope and renewal. As the flowers begin to bloom, we can't help but feel optimistic about the future. Catherine McAuley's hope is another quality that continues to inspire us today. Despite the difficulties and hardships she faced, she never gave up. Her hope was contagious, and it inspired many others to keep going, even in the face of adversity. Just as spring brings new life and growth, Catherine McAuley's hope brings a new light to those who are facing difficult situations.
Just like the honeybees, Catherine McAuley's role in society was vital for the survival and well-being of many. Honeybees play an important role in the pollination of plants, which in turn, provides us with the food we need to survive. Similarly, Catherine McAuley's role in society was vital for the survival and well-being of many. Her tireless efforts to improve the lives of the poor and marginalised have left an indelible mark on society.
Catherine McAuley's life and work remain a source of inspiration for individuals committed to effecting positive change in our world. As she aptly put it, 'The simplest and most practical lesson I know is to resolve to be good today, but better tomorrow.' Let us draw inspiration from Catherine McAuley's wisdom and the honeybees as we embark on our journey to leave a positive imprint on the world. Just as the bees tirelessly gather nectar to produce honey, may we cultivate compassion, resilience, and hope in our hearts, igniting a fervent determination to make a meaningful difference.

Sienna Deurloo
Sienna is an accomplished swimmer who has achieved significant success in both regional and national swimming competitions. She recently participated in the Australian School Sport Swimming Championships in Sydney, where she had the honour of serving as the Queensland Swimming Captain.
During the championships, she displayed her exceptional talent by winning three gold medals and one bronze medal. Sienna’s victories in the 400m Freestyle, 800m Freestyle and 1500m Freestyle events earned her the National Title in those categories. Additionally, she contributed to her team’s success by helping them secure a bronze medal in the Girls 17 – 19 years Freestyle Relay.
Sienna’s achievements have not gone unnoticed, as she was selected as an Olympic Open Water Pathway Prospecting Patron Scholarship recipient. This recognition reflects her potential to inspire and mentor the next generation of championship swimmers.
Furthermore, Sienna’s success extended to the Queensland State Short Course Swimming Championships where she demonstrated her versatility by winning the gold in the Open and Age categories for the 1500m and 800m freestyle events. She also secured silver in the 400m freestyle and bronze in the 200m and 100m backstroke events. These accomplishments have earned her a spot in the upcoming Australian Flippers Team Camp hosted at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. This experience undoubtedly provides her with valuable insights and training opportunities to further enhance her swimming career.
Sienna is undoubtedly a rising star in the world of swimming with a promising future ahead of her.
Congratulations
Well done to the Division 4 girls who took out the grand final last Wednesday night against Ninjas. The girls finished in third place at the end of the regular season, so it was a hard battle to come out on top. At half time we were leading by 10 points, and I sat back and relaxed a little but after half-time, we took our minds off the game, and they came back at us.
The girls finally heard the hooter to end the game and I stopped eating my fingernails and won the game 6 points ahead.

Women Who Weld Program
St Joseph's College held another successful ‘Women Who Weld’ course in the college's Engineering Workshop yesterday.
A group of nine Year 10 girls signed up for the course and were introduced to Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding, as well as a quick introduction to Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW).
The students heard from Elisa Ginardi of JRS Manufacturing about her Industry and what opportunities are available at JRS for work experience and apprenticeships.
The students were also able to get some hands-on experience constructing a jewelry tree - a fantastic souvenir of a great day and potentially sparking a life-long passion!
Thank you to Queensland Manufacturing Institute for their ongoing support for St Joseph’s College and the ‘Women Who Weld’ programs which the College has held over the past few years
