From the Principal
Dear Parents and Friends of St Joseph’s College,
On Friday St Joseph’s College recognised the contributions that our teachers make to the lives our young people as part of World Teacher’s Day. Teachers today bring a variety of skills and dispositions to their classrooms including numeracy, literacy, and digital capabilities along with subject field knowledge. Additionally, a teacher assists the social and emotional development of their students through self-regulation, goal setting, problem-solving, mental health awareness and team building. At St Joseph’s College, our teaching staff enact our Catholic Identity to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed in a distinctively Catholic environment. I am extremely proud and grateful for our staff who grow our most precious resource, our young men, and women.
Prayer for Teachers
Lord, we pray that You would equip our teachers in every way with the wisdom that they need to lead their classes and schools every day.
God, we pray that Your strength would fill them and enable them to do all that they do with a heart of compassion, grace and understanding that comes right from You.
Congratulations to Natasha Digweed who was recently certified by the Queensland College of Teachers as a Highly Accomplished Teacher. She was recognised for her ability, knowledge, and skill to promote quality teaching. Natasha over a significant period has made a significant impact on the lives of students and her teaching peers. The College is immensely proud of Natasha and her accomplishments.
Recently after a system review, the title of Assistant Principal Religious Education has changed to Assistant Principal Mission and Identity (APMI). This change has been informed by a more contemporary understanding of religious leadership in the current school and Church context. The review recommended that with a role which is more centred around Catholic identity, mission, Catholic pedagogy, and the religious life of the school, it required a title change. At St Joseph’s College Ms Kellie Maree Ford is our APMI. Kellie embraces the true spirit of this role description through her leadership of Religious Education and the Religious Life of the School. She has been instrumental in the implementation of a recontextualized curriculum that encourages dialogical conversation. Kellie has also worked tirelessly to engage our students in developing liturgies and engagement in service. As a College, we look forward to celebrating her continuing work in the APMI role.
In acknowledging Kellie’s work as APMI, I wish to announce that her knowledge and skills have been recognised with her appointment to the position of Project Officer Respectful Relations Education at Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office in 2025. The position is a secondment for twelve months and we look forward to her return in 2026. Congratulations Ms Ford.
After an extensive consultative process, I am pleased to inform our community that the soon-to-be-completed new building will be named the Mary Rice Building. The Bishop has approved Mary Rice as the most appropriate name. This is an extension to the existing Mary Rice building and further strengthens the explicit link to Edmund Rice and the long association that St Joseph’s has to Edmund Rice Charism.
Last Friday our Year 12 students celebrated their last day of regular classes with staff and their younger peers. Students donned alternate uniforms and engaged in activities that allowed them to reflect on their journey at St Joseph’s College. Students have now commenced external examinations which will be completed over the next three weeks. Students studying General subjects will engage in Master Classes prior to their respective exams and may study off-campus when not engaged in master classes or exams. Students will then return to the college in week 7 for their final days before graduating.
Recently our Parent Engagement Network (PEN) held a parent session in conjunction with the College to present draft eligibility criteria for student participation in extra-curricular events. Parents provided feedback on the elements and language surrounding the criteria which will inform the final version to take effect from the beginning of 2025. The criteria set out the standards required of students regarding attendance, behaviour, engagement in learning and uniform compliance, whilst parent/carer commitment to agreed fees and financial plans was also tabled. I thank Mr Joe Cryle and the PEN Executive for their respective delivery and hosting of the evening.
A reminder to our parents and carers of students to refrain from contacting students on their personal mobile devices between the hours of 8.30am and 3pm. The college policy is that students are not to be on their devices between these hours to minimise distractions and to encourage students to fully engage in their learning programs and peer interactions. Should parents or carers need to contact their child or speak with staff then the college protocol is to contact Student Entrance staff who will call the student to the office and relay messages or advise the relevant staff member. This position allows for the convenience of parents and students to make personal arrangements in non-school times whilst also ensuring that the college staff can work in partnership with parents and carers.
God Bless,
Jim Brennan - Principal - jbrennan@sjc.qld.edu.au

World Teachers Day – 25 October 2024
World Teachers' Day is a prime opportunity to celebrate and thank our teachers for the important role in our communities and for the positive impact they have on the lives of young people. It is celebrated in Queensland Catholic schools on Friday 25 October. This year’s theme is ‘teachers make a difference’. We thank our amazingly generous teachers at St Joseph’s College for their commitment and dedication to the young people in our community.
A Prayer for World Teacher’s Day
Dear God,
We thank you for the gift of teachers, who dedicate their lives and vocation to sharing your wisdom and love with their students. We ask you to bless them with your grace and guidance, and to fill them with joy and peace. We pray that you inspire them with new ideas and methods, and that you help them overcome any challenges or difficulties they may face.
We thank you for the gift of students, who are eager to learn and grow. We ask you to bless them with your knowledge and understanding, and to fill them with curiosity and enthusiasm. We pray that you give them strength and courage. We also pray that you nurture them with your compassion and kindness, and that you help them achieve their goals and dreams.
We thank you for the gift of education, which is a powerful tool for liberating lives and societies to make a positive difference in the world.
Amen.

- Highlight individual student needs and abilities to be addressed and supported
- Guiding the classes students are in 2025 and beyond
- Improving whole school literacy and numeracy levels
- Providing teachers with objective information for setting realistic learning goals and planning effective programs

School TV
We would like to take the opportunity to draw your attention to School TV. This is a resource we provide to parents to help navigate the various challenges that come with parenting teenagers. All resources provided by School TV are research informed, we hope they will be helpful to parents in our community.
At St Joseph’s College, we are particularly aware of the fairly recent challenges that come with students having access to mobile devices, the online world and social media.
This set of videos provides guidance for parents on managing screen time as well as managing digital conflict with you people.

Lead Through Service Imperative
When Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, he was doing two things. Firstly, he was saying that no one person is better, or more deserving of love than any other. Secondly, he was demonstrating that no act is too big, or too small, to change a situation. While our scope of influence may seem small, we can change the world for someone. Edmund Rice said, “the poor were the chief object of [my] attention - in fact, this wonderful sympathy for God's poor was one of [my] most distinctive characteristics”. There is a plethora of ways that Edmund Rice demonstrated servant leadership, no act was too big or too small to make a difference to someone else’s life.
Leading Through Service is at the core of our school motto: “Serve Him in Others”. By helping out those in need, we are doing God’s work in our own unique way. We do this in big ways, through our social justice programs; and in little ways. From picking up the bit of litter we walk past, to big acts of Servant Leadership, we are all given the opportunity to lead through service.
As we begin preparing for the season of Advent, it is a pleasure to see so many students committing themselves to the spirit of giving. From the amazing efforts of staff and students who participated in the Hike for the Homeless, to the JW groups planning for how they will fill their St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hampers- our students are leading through service.
Across Term 4, we begin to offer students tasters of the service opportunities they can commit to in 2025. I encourage all our students to find their way of service and possibly explore the many service groups on offer.
Mission and Service Activities:
Year Level Groups:
- Year 11 and 12 Liturgy Groups – All seniors are encouraged to consider contributing their voice to our liturgical theme and celebrations.

Prayer for Service
Dear Lord,
We pray in gratitude for those who strive to uphold the St Joseph’s College motto of ‘Serve Him in Others’.
We thank you for their commitment this year to enriching and deepening the Joey’s Way through living out the core values of respect, endeavour, dignity and compassion.
We pray that we may remain eager, hopeful and light-hearted in the service of God and this community.
Amen

2025 College Captains
Hello, SJC Community!
It’s Timothy Kist and Emalia Brocherie here, and we are extremely honoured to be your 2025 College Captains! We’re incredibly excited to embrace this leadership role, along with our devoted team consisting of 16 other student leaders. Our whole team is excited to begin serving SJC.
First and foremost, we want to express how truly grateful we are to be named as your College Captains. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment in just the first couple of weeks since our appointment and have already experienced a multitude of incredible opportunities. Together, we will strive to make a positive impact and uphold the values that make our community so special.
We also would like to take a moment to extend our sincere gratitude to our predecessors, Joe and Sophie, for their exceptional leadership and dedication to our school; we are committed to building on the strong foundation they have established.
Our primary focus for 2025 is to foster a spirit of inclusivity and belonging. We believe that every student should feel valued and respected in our school. We aim to create an environment where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels respected and accepted.
To embrace this new year, we encourage everyone—especially our younger students—to implement these strategies.
First, we challenge you to try something new. You never know what passions you might discover and the new people you might meet by stepping outside your comfort zone. Secondly, get to know the people who sit beside you and make a conscious effort to be kind and considerate to everyone, creating a cohesive environment and finally strive to find enjoyment in everything you do, whether it’s your math class, playing sport for the school, or having lunch with friends. By embracing who you are, you inspire others to do the same. When we all find enjoyment in being ourselves, we will truly create a community of belonging.
Let’s work together to create a culture where every voice is heard and valued. By embracing new experiences and being our authentic selves, we can transform our school into a place where everyone truly belongs.
We hope that you enjoy the rest of the term and have a joyous and relaxing summer holiday!
Warm Regards,
2025 College Captains - Emalia Brocherie and Timothy Kist
Brennan House
Leadership
Earlier this term, our Brennan House Captains for 2025 were announced. I am very excited to welcome Riley Chandler and Mitchell Hunt to their leadership positions in the house and look forward to seeing what these leaders will bring to Brennan House for 2025.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our leaders for this year Maddison Skuse and Cooper Van Der Linden who have led and supported Brennan House through all our sporting carnivals, assemblies, lunchtime challenges and formal occasions. I wish our two leaders of 2024 and all our Year 12 Brennan students all the best for their final exams, end-of-year celebrations and future beyond St Joseph’s. I hope that they fondly remember their time at the College, especially Brennan house, and always remember to ‘Care for Everybody’.
Finishing strong
At this time of the year, the weather is heating up, Christmas decorations are appearing in stores, and the holidays are just around the corner. It is a time when we are excited for the break but still have a number of weeks to go and all the while assessments starting to pile up. This is when we need to be able to dig deep and endeavour with our studies and assessment to finish the end of the term as strong as possible. Below are a number of ideas and strategies to support students continue working right up to the end of the term.
Strategies to Keep Studying When You’re Nearly Finished
1. Set Clear, Achievable Goals
Break down your remaining tasks into smaller, manageable goals. This makes the workload seem less overwhelming and gives you a sense of accomplishment as you complete each task.
2. Create a Study Schedule
Plan your study sessions in advance. Allocate specific times for each subject or task, and stick to your schedule. This helps ensure you cover all necessary material without last-minute cramming.
3. Take Regular Breaks
Studying for long periods without breaks can lead to burnout. Use techniques where you study for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break. This keeps your mind fresh and focused.
4. Stay Organised
Keep your study space tidy and your materials organised. A clutter-free environment can reduce distractions and help you concentrate better.
5. Stay Positive and Reward Yourself
Maintain a positive mindset by reminding yourself of your progress and the end goal. Reward yourself for completing tasks, whether it’s a small treat, a short walk, or some leisure time.
6. Stay Connected with Peers
Studying with friends or classmates can provide motivation and support. You can share resources, quiz each other, and keep each other accountable.
7. Prioritize Self-Care
Ensure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising. Taking care of your physical health can significantly impact your mental stamina and focus.
8. Seek Help When Needed
If you’re struggling with certain topics, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Reach out to your teachers, tutors, or classmates for clarification and assistance.
By implementing these strategies, you can maintain your momentum and finish your studies on a high note. Remember, the effort you put in now will pay off in the long run. Keep pushing forward—you’ve got this!
Care for Everybody,

2025 Triathlon Qualifiers Announced
The 2025 triathlon season has kicked off with the recent State Triathlon Championships held in Noosa. The event served as the qualifying race for the upcoming year's national competition.
In the junior boys' division, Taylor Wann secured a spot on the 2025 representative team. The intermediate boys' category saw Riley Bryant earn a coveted position as well.
Both young athletes delivered impressive performances, showcasing their dedication and talent in the sport of triathlon. Their selection to the 2025 national team is a testament to the hard work and commitment they have demonstrated throughout their training.
The State Triathlon Championships in Hervey Bay this February will serve as the next major qualifying event for the 2025 triathlon season. Aspiring triathletes will vie for the remaining spots on the national team, eager to represent their state and country on the world stage.
The triathlon community eagerly anticipates the 2025 season, filled with the promise of thrilling competitions and the emergence of the next generation of triathlon stars.
The Annual CBSQ Basketball Carnival on the Gold Coast for Year 9/10 Boys and Girls
From October 10th to 13th, two of our school's basketball teams travelled to the Gold Coast to compete in the annual basketball carnival.
The girls' team faced an early start, with their first game scheduled for 8:00am, followed by the boys' team at 9:00am. Despite the challenging schedule, the teams made the decision to drive down the night before, only to encounter a severe storm along the way. Fortunately, the storm appeared to split, and the teams only had to contend with some rainfall.
Our opposition travelled from Coolum and left at 4:15am only to find themselves 4 minutes late for our game, so it was a positive decision made.
The girls' team concluded the event in a commendable 7th place out of 16 teams. They narrowly lost a couple of games by 2 and 3 points, which could have significantly impacted their final position had they secured those wins.
Coach Hayden Maripa deserves recognition for his exceptional work with the girls' team, dedicating his time over yet another weekend to support the players.
Girls
St Joseph’s 37 lost to Immanuel Lutheran College 39
St Joseph’s 23 lost to Somerset Spartans 26
St Joseph’s 27 won against Yarrabilba State Secondary College 18
St Joseph’s 28 won against Pimpama State Secondary College 21
St Joseph’s 27 lost to Capalaba State College 36
St Joseph’s 20 lost to Clayfield College 28
St Joseph’s 26 won against Meridan State College 20
The boys' team fought hard throughout the carnival, never giving up. However, they were pushed up into Division 3 after last year's runners-up team, and the current squad lacked the firepower to compete at that level. Additionally, a few players were carrying injuries, which hampered their performance.
Boys
St Joseph’s 33 lost to Coolum SHS 51
St Joseph’s 35 lost to Calamvale Community College 42
St Joseph’s 31 lost to Canterbury College 35
St Joseph’s 26 lost to Coomera Anglican College 56
St Joseph’s 19 lost to Sheldon College 37
St Joseph’s 18 lost to Canterbury College 57
St Joseph’s 36 lost to Grace Lutheran College 50
The students demonstrated remarkable resilience, enduring long days that sometimes saw them arriving at the courts as early as 8:30am and not returning to the accommodation until 5:30pm. Their dedication to the sport was evident, as they had limited time for activities outside of basketball.
The boys' team was under the guidance of Mr. Richardson, who took time off work to attend the carnival. We are deeply grateful for his commitment to the team. Additionally, a heartfelt thank you goes to Mrs. Morrison, who accompanied the team and assisted with the score bench. Their willingness to dedicate their weekends to support student participation in these events is truly amazing.
Overall, the annual basketball carnival on the Gold Coast provided our students with a valuable opportunity to showcase their skills and represent our school with pride. The dedication and resilience demonstrated by the players and coaches alike are a testament to the strength of our basketball program.
Shooting Club
We welcomed young Maddy Dorries into our community at the beginning of the term. She has already come to my attention for her shooting ability after she competed at the Clifton State High School and Clifton Benchrest Shooting Club shooting challenge. This event was held on October 11 at Leyburn.
Ms Dorres said that she had a great day, and it was a brilliant new experience for her. Her team didn’t place with over 60 competitors in the event, but she will hopefully learn from this competition and continue to improve.
Parents/Guardians/Players – Missing Uniforms.
Asking for assistance now. I have a number of uniforms still outstanding from recent carnivals and this means sets are incomplete.
I would appreciate it if you could search through drawers, wardrobes, in cars, under beds and in lockers to see if any of the college uniforms are hiding and they can be bought back to me. Just hand them into either the student entrance or front office or directly to me in the MacKillop Centre.
Thanking you in advance for assisting in this matter.
Election Fund Raiser
Please come and vote at St Joseph’s College on Saturday and support the QISSNC netball girls and they fund raise to attend the carnival in Bundaberg this year.
We will have ‘democratic’ sausage sizzle and some homemade sweets to purchase. We would love to see you here.

As part of this unit, students are learning about Enterprise Skills, also known as, Transferrable Skills. Teamwork is one skill that students have learned more about in their lessons.
Teamwork Skills: Definition and Examples
Having strong teamwork skills is essential to succeeding at work no matter what industry you are in or job title you have. Working well with clients, colleagues, managers and other people in your workplace can help you complete tasks efficiently while creating an enjoyable environment both for yourself and others. An organisation that focuses on good teamwork skills is typically a healthy, high-functioning workplace. In this article, Indeed will take a closer look at what teamwork skills are, how you can improve your team work skills and other soft skills that can help you be a good teammate.
Work experience and why it matters
Work experience can open up your mind to the great possibilities for work. You can learn a lot about:
- the workplace you visit
- the types of education and training required to enter different jobs
- how the job might fit within your own life.
Often parents and students think that the purpose of work experience is to assist you to obtain part-time work. This undervalues work experience as a program to help you explore, develop and refine your career ideas. So how do you get the most out of work experience? Read about a few points that you could consider:
- Be informed
- Be prepared
- Start now
- Be resilient
- Be involved

St Joseph’s College Christmas Appeal:
Spreading Joy with St Vincent De Paul’s Toowoomba
As the festive season approaches, the 2024 Just Joey’s group is excited to once again announce our annual Christmas Appeal in partnership with St Vincent De Paul’s, Toowoomba. This year, we are committed to making a significant impact on our local community by supporting forty families in need.
Toowoomba is home to many families who face financial hardships, especially during the holiday season. According to St Vincent De Paul’s Australia, the demand for assistance has been rising, with many families struggling to afford basic necessities. In 2023, St Vincent De Paul’s provided over 1,200 emergency relief services to families in the Toowoomba region. These statistics highlight the critical need for community support and generosity and the impact that we stand to make.
So, for 2024, each Joey’s Way class at St Joseph’s College will be assigned a family to support this Christmas. This means that our school aims to bring joy to forty families through our collective efforts.
Students can contribute to the Christmas Appeal in several meaningful ways:
- Everyday Non-Perishable Food: Items such as rice, chickpeas, lentils, long-life milk, savoury crackers, and sweet biscuits are essential for daily sustenance.
- Celebration Non-Perishable Food: To add a festive touch, we encourage donations of chocolates, sweets, soft drinks, juice, and chips.
- Monetary Donations: Joey’s Way teachers will collect monetary donations to purchase gift cards for families, allowing them to buy what they need most.
- Small Gifts for Children: We also welcome small gifts for the children listed on the cards. Please ensure that gifts are not wrapped, so they can be appropriately distributed.
We invite all students, parents, and staff to participate in this heartwarming initiative. Your contributions, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Let’s come together as a community to ensure that every family has a joyful and memorable Christmas.
For more information, please contact your Joey’s Way teacher, Adam Watts, or visit the St Vincent De Paul’s website.
Together, we can make this holiday season brighter for everyone.

As we move closer to the end of the school year, we are still looking for a wonderful host family for our incoming Japanese exchange student, Kazuma Ozawa, who will join our Year 10 cohort from the beginning of Term 1, 2025 (9 weeks – Kazuma will return to Japan before Year 10s go on work experience in Week 10). Kazuma is interested in history, music and video games and he is very keen to improve his English and learn about Australian culture while here.
Host families are asked to provide all meals, transport to and from school each day and suitable accommodation and will receive generous payment to help with these costs.
If you are interested and would like further information, please contact Ms Nunn at the College.
